Here are steps to take when the heating system fails in the middle of winter:

- Use the fireplace – For homes equipped with a fireplace, take advantage of the available heat source.
- Check windows and doors – You want to make the home as airtight as possible to prevent any remaining heat from leaking out. Make sure all windows are shut tight and close blinds or drapes. Eliminate drafts from under doors with a rolled up towel.
