The terms “technicians” and “contractors” are often used when referring to HVAC professionals. Maybe you’re wondering if these two professions are the same. Both work in the HVAC industry, so it may seem confusing. These two professions do differ in a few ways. It will make a difference in who you hire the next time you need one or the other.
What Is an HVAC Contractor?
HVAC contractors are self-employed like many other types of contractors. Their goal is to find contract work, such as designing and installing HVAC systems. If the project is small, they might do all the work themselves. Larger projects may require a team of HVAC technicians or HVAC apprentices to complete.

HVAC technicians may be fully licensed technicians, or they may be somewhere in the middle of a paid apprenticeship. A HVAC apprentice is a full-time employee of the contractor. Technicians may not be apprentices, but may work as repair and installation technicians for contractors. Furthermore, fully-licensed technicians can perform all HVAC work on their own. Thus, they might work for themselves or find freelance work as technicians.
